A net hung over a sleeping area to keep mosquitoes and other insects out. Often associated with traditional Japanese summer imagery.

蚊帳 is a portable mosquito net hung over a sleeping area, whereas 網戸 is a fixed mesh screen attached to a window or door.
Standard kanji spelling; the reading かや is the most common.
Rarely used kanji form; 蚊帳 is strongly preferred.
A native compound of 蚊, “mosquito,” and 屋, “enclosure,” traditionally written 蚊屋. 蚊帳 became the conventional written form, with 帳, “curtain,” representing the mosquito net.
