house arrest (Edo-period punishment)

Historical term for a punishment during the Edo period where a samurai was confined to his residence. Not used for modern house arrest.

• 江え戸ど時じ代だい、蟄ちっ居きょは武ぶ士しに科かされる刑けい罰ばつの一ひとつだった。

  In the Edo period, chikkyo was one of the punishments imposed on samurai.
