Historical term for a beggar or the act of begging, literally 'sleeve begging'. Rare in modern Japanese; the more common word is 乞食 (こじき).

• 江え戸ど時じ代だいには、袖そで乞ごいをする者ものが街まち角かどに立たっていた。

  In the Edo period, beggars stood on street corners.

• 「袖そで乞ごい」という言こと葉ばは、今いまではほとんど使つかわれない。

  The word 袖乞い is hardly used nowadays.
