loss of a low-ranked wrestler in the extra eighth bout
Sumo term: when a low-ranked wrestler (usually makushita or below) loses in the additional eighth bout held on the final day of a tournament. This bout is arranged to give a winning record to a wrestler who would otherwise end with a losing record.
The makushita wrestler missed a winning record due to a loss in the extra eighth bout.
Compound of 負け (make, 'loss') and 得 (toku, 'profit' or 'gain'), literally 'loss gain'. The term refers to the fact that the low-ranked wrestler gains a bout opportunity but ends up losing it.
