Obsolete legal term from the former Japanese Penal Code; a severe form of imprisonment that included compulsory hard labor. Replaced by modern 懲役 (ちょうえき).

Under the old Penal Code, major imprisonment was a heavier punishment than minor imprisonment.
軽禁錮 was a lighter form of imprisonment without hard labor, contrasted with 重禁錮 which included compulsory labor.
Modern equivalent: imprisonment with work. 重禁錮 is the historical predecessor under the old Penal Code.
