Etymology

The expression combines 間 (ma, 'interval, space, timing') with 持つ (motsu, 'to hold, to have'), literally 'to hold the space/timing'. It likely derives from traditional Japanese arts where ma is a crucial aesthetic concept, extended to describe a person's ability to control the atmosphere.
