Edo-period inn maid who also worked as a prostitute

Historical term for a female servant at a post-station inn during the Edo period who served meals and also engaged in prostitution. Often associated with the 飯盛旅籠 (meshimori hatago) type of inn.

  At post stations in the Edo period, meshimori onna entertained travelers.

  Meshimori onna ostensibly worked as waitresses, but in practice they worked as prostitutes.
