In Buddhism, one of the six realms of rebirth (六道), where beings suffer from insatiable hunger and thirst.

It is said that if you fall into the realm of hungry ghosts, you constantly suffer from hunger and thirst.
From 餓鬼 (がき, 'hungry ghost') + 道 (どう, 'realm, path'). 餓鬼 is a translation of Sanskrit preta, referring to a class of tormented beings in Buddhist cosmology.
