A seasonal word (kigo) for spring, describing the overcast sky seen when birds that wintered in Japan leave for the north. Used in haiku and poetic contexts.

• 鳥とり曇ぐもりの空そらを見み上あげると、もう北きたへ帰かえる鳥とりたちの姿すがたはなかった。

  Looking up at the bird-departure overcast sky, the birds heading north were already gone.

• 春はるの季き語ごとして「鳥とり曇ぐもり」が俳はい句くに詠よまれる。

  As a spring kigo, 'torigumori' is used in haiku.
