がち・っぽい・けいこうがある・きらいがある

Choosing how to describe a tendency

Choose by asking three questions: Is this a mild condition visible now, a pattern that keeps recurring, or a broader trend supported by observations? Then consider tone. marks a slight current sign, がち an often undesirable recurring pattern, っぽい a casual resemblance or disposition, けいこうがある an analytical trend, and きらいがある a formally criticized fault or bias.

Start with the kind of tendency

The English word “tendency” covers several different time spans and attitudes. Match the form to what you have actually observed.

A mild condition showing now

A state is present to a small degree or appears to be developing, such as fatigue, illness, shortage, or delay.

It does not by itself describe an established habit across many occasions.

A recurring unwanted pattern

がち

Someone or something repeatedly behaves in a certain way or is prone to a result, usually one seen as undesirable.

It means “tends to,” not “always.”

A casual resemblance or disposition

っぽい

In conversation, something resembles a quality, contains a noticeable amount of something, or a person is prone to certain behavior.

Its meaning depends heavily on the base, and invented combinations may not sound natural.

A trend across observations

けいこうがある

You are generalizing from a group, a period of time, repeated observations, records, or data. The trend may be positive, negative, or neutral.

One isolated event is not enough to support this analytical claim.

A fault or bias under criticism

きらいがある

Formal analysis points out a recurring weakness in a person, institution, policy, or line of reasoning.

This is measured criticism, not a neutral substitute for “tends to,” and it does not mean that someone dislikes something.

Current slippage or recurring trouble?

A delivery operation is late. The first sentence reports a mild problem visible during the current period; the second describes what repeatedly happens under the same conditions.

こんしゅうはいそうすこおくだ。

Deliveries are running a little late this week.

Analyze

このかいしゃはんぼうになるとはっそうおくれがちだ。

This company tends to ship orders late during busy periods.

Analyze

Takeaway: looks at the degree of a condition now; がち looks across occasions and identifies a recurring risk.

The casual form covers more than tendencies

っぽい is not simply a casual replacement for every other form here. With one base it may mean “resembling”; with another it may describe abundance or a recurring disposition. The completed expression behaves like an i-adjective, but natural combinations still need to be learned through use.

Resemblance and disposition in conversation

そのはなしすこつくばなしっぽいね。

That story sounds a little made up.

Analyze

The story resembles a fabricated tale; this is not a repeated behavior.

いもうときっぽくてちいさなことでなみだる。

My younger sister is prone to crying and tears up over little things.

Analyze

Here the verb stem describes a characteristic disposition.

Reporting a pattern or condemning a bias

A careful report can either describe an observed direction neutrally or identify a recurring institutional fault.

ようろくると、あたらしいあんないしたあとわせがけいこうがある

Usage records show that inquiries tend to decrease after new guidance is issued.

Analyze

このしょは、もんだいきるとじんせきにんだけをついきゅうし、みのけっかんごすきらいがある

This department has a tendency to pursue individual responsibility while overlooking flaws in the system.

Analyze

The surrounding details provide a concrete basis for the institutional criticism.

Takeaway: けいこうがある leaves the evaluation to the facts and context. きらいがある itself presents the repeated behavior as a fault.
