に堪えないUnable to contain a powerful emotion
に堪えない formally presents an emotion as so strong that it cannot be contained or left unexpressed. Despite its negative shape, it intensifies the emotion rather than denying it.
What the negative form means
The idea is not that the emotion is absent. Rather, the speaker cannot contain it: the feeling is too strong to remain unexpressed. English therefore normally uses an intensive translation such as “profoundly grateful,” “deeply moved,” or “overjoyed.”
A formal acknowledgment
長年にわたりご支援いただいた皆様には、感謝の念に堪えません。
We are profoundly grateful to everyone who has supported us over the years.

The construction strongly favors established combinations. It is not a free substitute for “very” with any emotion word.

Same form, different sense
After an emotion noun, as in 感謝に堪えない, the form intensifies that emotion. After a perception or appraisal verb, as in 見るに堪えない, it instead judges something too unpleasant or poor to experience. Check the word immediately before the form.
