When an incidental moment or momentum triggers something
た拍子に and た弾みに present one action or movement as the accidental trigger for an unexpected, uncontrolled result. The result is often troublesome, but it can also be a fortunate surprise or a sudden recollection.
The first event must actually trigger the second
This pattern does more than place two events close together in time. The action before 拍子 or 弾み must create the circumstances, motion, or impetus that brings about the unexpected result. The second event should therefore feel uncontrolled or unintended.
Moment and momentum
拍子 often highlights the chance moment at which something happened, while 弾み readily suggests physical or figurative momentum. This is a useful tendency, not a rigid division.
As I stood up from the chair, an old ticket accidentally fell out of my pocket.
AnalyzeStanding up created the incidental moment and movement that caused the ticket to fall.
The force of slamming the door made the photo frame on the shelf fall over.
AnalyzeHere the physical momentum makes 弾み particularly natural.
Hearing the name suddenly reminded me of a promise I had forgotten.
AnalyzeThe result is not negative, but it is sudden and unplanned.
Immediate succession is not enough
たとたん emphasizes that B happened immediately after A, often surprisingly. By contrast, 拍子 and 弾み say that A accidentally caused or prompted B.
The lights went out the instant I sat down.
AnalyzeThe events are immediately successive, but sitting down need not have caused the lights to go out.
Accidental trigger versus broader starting point
をきっかけに can introduce an event that starts a deliberate or extended change. The present pattern instead points to a sudden, unintended consequence of a particular moment or momentum.
Studying abroad inspired me to pursue a career in education.
AnalyzeThis is a continuing change of direction, not a sudden accidental result.
