Trigger or turning point for a new development

These expressions present an event, experience, or situation as the trigger or occasion from which a meaningfully different activity, relationship, habit, or state begins. The new development often continues beyond the original event.

Choosing the viewpoint

がきっかけで presents A as the thing that triggered the later development. It works naturally for an unplanned connection noticed in retrospect. をきっかけに frames A as the occasion for B and can suggest that someone consciously used the occasion to make a change, though deliberate action is not required.

An unplanned trigger

An article I happened to read sparked my interest in marine issues.

Analyze

The article was not deliberately chosen as an opportunity; it simply became the trigger.

Using an occasion to change

I used graduation as an opportunity to develop the habit of running every morning.

Analyze

Here the speaker consciously treats graduation as a suitable occasion for a new habit.

What normally follows

B should be a distinct new development, not merely the next event in a sequence. Common results include starting an activity, forming a relationship, changing a habit, gaining an interest, or beginning a longer social or organizational change.

Formal use

The organization used the institutional reforms as an opportunity to improve information sharing between departments.

Analyze

けい suits this institutional context; in everyday conversation it would usually sound unnecessarily formal.

Trigger versus dividing boundary

をきっかけに identifies what prompted or launched a change. By contrast, さかい marks a dividing point between before and after; it does not necessarily say that the boundary itself caused the change.

Online classes prompted me to begin researching teaching methods.

Analyze

Spring break marked the point after which many classes moved online.

Analyze

Spring break is presented as the dividing boundary, not as the motivation for the change.
