手前Constraint from one's position or face
手前 says that something you previously said or did, or the position you hold before other people, now constrains your actions. Backing down would make you look inconsistent, irresponsible, or embarrassed.
The pressure comes from consistency and appearances
The first part establishes the speaker's socially visible position. The main clause then gives the constrained response: the person cannot withdraw, must accept responsibility, or feels compelled to follow through. The connection must involve face, consistency, responsibility, or how the person's conduct will look to others—not merely an ordinary cause.
A promise that cannot easily be withdrawn
必ず完成させると約束した手前、今さらできないとは言えない。
Having promised that I would definitely finish it, I cannot now say that I am unable to.
AnalyzeThe promise has created a position from which admitting defeat would be embarrassing and inconsistent.
Pressure created by a role
監督として選手に努力を求めている手前、自分だけ妥協するわけにはいかない。
As the coach, I keep demanding effort from the players, so I cannot be the only one who compromises.
AnalyzeThe coach's continuing message to the players makes personal compromise difficult without undermining that role.
What normally follows
The main clause normally expresses a consequence that protects the person's position. Frequent outcomes include being unable to do something, having no responsible choice but to act, or firmly deciding to see something through. A neutral result with no connection to reputation or consistency will usually sound unmotivated.
An audience whose opinion matters
後輩の手前、知らないとは言いにくかった。
With my junior colleagues looking to me, it was hard to admit that I did not know.
AnalyzeThe junior colleagues are the audience before whom the speaker wants to preserve credibility.
Choosing the right expression
手前 identifies the socially visible stance that creates pressure. からには instead draws commitment from the fact that a condition holds. わけにはいかない gives the resulting social or circumstantial inability more broadly and does not itself require a prior stance. ないでは済まない focuses on an action that accountability makes unavoidable.
