とのReported content modifying a noun

との places quoted or reported content directly before a noun such as “report,” “announcement,” “view,” or “information.” It is a compact, formal way to express “a report that...” or “the view that....”

How it works

The clause before gives the content being reported. The following connects that content to the next noun. That noun must be something capable of carrying or expressing content, such as れんらく, ほうこく, はっぴょう, けん, or かた.

Typical formal uses

こうつうきょくは、らいげつからうんちんかいていするとのはっぴょうおこなった。

The reported noun sentence ends in , which remains before との.

Quoted content or a relationship?

A full clause before との gives reported content. By contrast, a person or organization noun before the same sequence can mean “with” that person or organization. Check what appears before it and whether the following noun carries a report.

けんきゅうじょは、しんやくこうかくにんされたとのほうこくこうひょうした。

The institute published a report that the new drug's effectiveness had been confirmed.

Analyze

Here a full clause supplies the content of the report.

けんきゅうじょだいがくとのきょうどうけんきゅうはじめた。

The institute began a joint research project with a university.

Analyze

This is not the target reporting pattern: だいがく is a participant in the joint research, not reported content.

Compared with the broader alternative

という can name, define, or describe many kinds of nouns and is common across a wider range of styles. For reported content before words such as “report” or “announcement,” との is the more compact and formal choice.
