もののAlthough; despite the fact that

ものの accepts the first statement as true, then adds a result or qualification that does not follow as expected. It has a detached, written-leaning tone.

How the contrast works

The first clause presents an established or accepted fact. The second clause then limits the conclusion you might normally draw from that fact. This makes the construction useful for measured qualifications rather than emotional complaints or imagined conditions.

Accepted fact, unexpected qualification

Notice that each first clause is treated as true; the contrast comes from what follows.

Nearby contrast forms

のに is more common in everyday conversation and can readily express disappointment or complaint. とはいうものの can resume and qualify an entire preceding statement, including from the start of a new sentence. ものを is emotionally marked by regret, resentment, or blame and may end the sentence. とはいえ also grants a fact and narrows its consequences, but it works more freely as a connector.
