中をAmid or through circumstances
中を presents an action as proceeding through or amid surrounding circumstances, often difficult or demanding ones. Depending on context, it can mean “through,” “amid,” or “despite.”
The image behind the construction
The basic image is movement through a space. With an abstract situation, that image remains: the action presses on through rain, darkness, danger, busyness, confusion, or another surrounding condition. The following verb therefore usually describes movement, effort, assistance, work, endurance, or another purposeful action.
The literal spatial pattern
ハイカーたちは深い森の中を歩き続けた。
The hikers kept walking through the deep forest.

Proceeding through difficult circumstances
The situation before 中を forms the demanding setting through which the action continues.
Location versus movement through circumstances
の中で simply says that an event occurs inside a place, group, or range. By contrast, 中を portrays the action as moving or pressing through the setting. The following sentence is a neutral location statement, not an example of the target construction.
子どもたちは体育館の中で遊んでいる。
The children are playing inside the gym.
