のことだからKnowing what someone is like

のことだから uses what the speaker already knows about a particular person or group to make a confident prediction or judgment. It often means “knowing what this person is like” or “given this person’s usual behavior.”

How it works

This expression does more than state a reason. It asks the listener to accept an established view of the person—such as being careful, habitually late, generous, or stubborn—and then treats the following prediction as characteristic of them. The conclusion is still the speaker’s judgment, not a proven fact.

Predictions from familiar character

The supporting trait may be favorable or unfavorable. What matters is that the speaker knows the person well enough to see the predicted behavior as typical.

ちょうめんとうさんのことだからりょうかくにんはもうんでいるはずだ。

Knowing how meticulous Ms. Sato is, the materials should already have been checked.

Analyze

Her known meticulousness supports the expectation, and はずだ marks the expected conclusion.

いつもわせにおくれるけんのことだから今日きょうおくれてるだろう。

Knowing Kenta, who is always late when meeting people, he will probably arrive late again today.

Analyze

The construction is not inherently complimentary; a familiar bad habit can also support the prediction.

What normally follows

The following clause normally expresses what the speaker expects. Clear prediction markers are especially common, including だろう, はずだ, ちがいない, and きっと. A plain confident statement is also natural when the context already makes the expectation clear.
