だけ (やるだけやる)do what you can; try anyway

The same verb comes before and after だけ: you do all there is to do of it, and what comes of it is another matter. This だけ isn't "only". It is "as much as", as in できるだけ.

How to form it

Verb + だけ + the same verb

The first verb is in the dictionary form or the potential form: やるだけやる, やれるだけやる. は can follow だけ: やるだけはやった.

First verbExampleWhat it says
I'll ask anyway, whatever the answer. Looking back: I did ask, at least.
I'll ask as much as I can.
He said all he wanted to, and left. Often a complaint.

I did that much

Looking back, with a clear conscience or as an excuse. The doing is done, and は sets it against the result, which usually fell short.

聞きくだけ聞きいてみよう: no harm in trying

Looking ahead, usually with てみる. You aren't counting on much, and you'll do it anyway.

やれるだけ: as much as you can

With the potential form first, the limit is what you are able to do. できるだけ says much the same without repeating the verb.
