ただしHowever; provided that; except that

ただし introduces a condition, exception, limitation, or caution that changes how the preceding statement applies. It is especially common in rules, notices, instructions, and careful written explanations.

How it works

First state the main permission, rule, offer, or general claim. Then use ただし before information that restricts its scope. Depending on the relationship, natural English may use “however,” “provided that,” “except that,” or “but note that.”

A required condition

Anyone may take this course, provided that they apply by the previous day.

Analyze

The second sentence states a requirement that must be met for the permission in the first sentence to apply.

An exception

The library is open every day, except that it is closed over the New Year holidays.

Analyze

The second statement removes a specific period from the general claim.

An objective caution

This container can be used in a microwave. However, it becomes extremely hot after heating, so take care not to burn yourself.

Analyze

This is a practical warning rather than a strict exception, but it materially affects how the first statement should be acted on.

Condition versus side note

ただし narrows or qualifies the previous statement. By contrast, ちなみに introduces related side information that leaves the previous rule unchanged.

Admission is available until 6 p.m. Incidentally, this building was constructed a hundred years ago.

Analyze

The building's age does not alter the admission deadline, so this is a side note rather than a condition.

Firm condition versus personal reservation

ただし readily states an objective or enforceable condition. もっとも more often adds the speaker's reservation or partial correction and is less suitable for laying down a firm rule.

The food at this restaurant is good, though I find the flavor a little strong.

Analyze

The second sentence is a personal reservation, not an enforceable condition.
