（よ）うか～まいかwhether to or not

You are torn between doing something and not doing it: "shall I or shan't I?". It is written, and a little literary.

彼かれはその手て紙がみを送おくろうか送おくるまいか、一ひと晩ばん中じゅう考かんがえた。

He spent the whole night wondering whether or not to send the letter.

仕し事ごとを辞やめようか辞やめまいか、彼かの女じょは数すう週しゅう間かんも迷まよっている。

For weeks she has been torn over whether to quit her job.

How to form it

行いこうか行いくまいか　／　食たべようか食たべまいか　／　しようかするまいか

The same verb twice: its （よ）う form with か, then its まい form with か. Godan verbs (う-verbs) take まい on the dictionary form. Ichidan verbs (る-verbs) can also keep る: 食たべるまいか. A verb like 留りゅう学がくする need not repeat its noun: 留りゅう学がくしようかするまいか. 来くる is 来こようか来くるまいか or 来こまいか.

After it: A verb of wavering or deciding: 迷まよう, 悩なやむ, 考かんがえる, ためらう, 決きめられない.
The verb: Something the person can choose to do: go, say, send, quit.
Said about: Yourself, or someone whose wavering you are describing.
Where you'll meet it: Novels, essays, exam passages. Said aloud it can sound like storytelling.

In use

本ほん当とうの理り由ゆうを話はなそうか話はなすまいか、彼かれはしばらく黙だまって考かんがえた。

He was silent for a while, wondering whether or not to give the real reason.

応おう募ぼしようか応おう募ぼするまいか、締しめ切きりの日ひまで決きめられなかった。

Right up to the deadline, I couldn't decide whether to apply or not.

その場ばを離はなれようか離はなれまいか、私わたしは一いっ瞬しゅんためらった。

The everyday "whether", and the one for what isn't a choice: whether it will rain is 降ふるかどうか, not 降ふろうか降ふるまいか.

明日あした行いけるかどうか、まだ分わかりません。

I don't know yet if I can go tomorrow.

With と or が in place of か, nobody is wavering: "whether or not", it makes no difference.

彼かれが来こようと来こまいと、会かい議ぎは十じゅう時じに始はじめる。

Whether he comes or not, we will start the meeting at ten.
