ずに済む・ ないで済む・ なくて済むManage without; avoid having to
These forms say that an action, expense, or unwanted consequence can be avoided while the situation still turns out adequately. The past form often conveys relief that something proved unnecessary.
What the ending adds
The key idea is not merely “without doing.” The ending 済む contributes the sense that this was enough: the matter was settled, or life could continue adequately, without the action.
Three forms in use
The surrounding context normally shows why avoiding the action is possible.
オンラインで手続きできたので、窓口へ行かずに済んだ。
The procedure could be completed online, so there was no need to go to the service counter.

More than simply doing without
Plain ずに only describes doing one thing without doing another. Adding 済む says that not doing it was sufficient and that the situation was successfully handled.
