じゃないCriticism, reminders, and discovery

じゃない can end a casual spoken sentence to criticize or remind someone, or to react to something the speaker has just noticed. Despite its negative-looking form, it often points out a fact positively: “You did,” “It is,” or “Look, there it is.”

What the ending does

The speaker presents something as an obvious or newly recognized fact and expects the listener to recognize it too. With past actions, this often sounds like “I told you” or “You knew that.” With something just noticed, it can sound like “Oh, it is!” or “Look, there it is!”

Reproach and discovery

The surrounding situation makes the intended reaction clear.

なんったじゃない

I've told you again and again!

Analyze

A reproachful reminder: the speaker is not denying that they said it.

あ、それ、えきまえにあったきってんじゃない

Oh, that's the café that used to be by the station!

Analyze

The speaker suddenly recognizes the place.

Pointing something out

The ending can also praise, encourage, or seek quick agreement by pointing to visible evidence. For example, after someone succeeds, できるじゃない means “See, you can do it!” rather than “You cannot do it.”

ほら、一人ひとりできたじゃない

See? You managed it by yourself!

Analyze

Here the tone is encouraging and approving, not critical.

Interactional ending versus literal negation

The interactional ending points out or reacts to a fact. Ordinary negative じゃない instead denies that a noun or na-adjective description is true. Clear context is essential because the written form can be identical.

あのひとてんいんじゃないよ。おきゃくさんだよ。

That person isn't an employee. They're a customer.

Analyze

This is literal negation, not the interactional use taught on this page.
