かえってInstead; contrary to expectations
かえって marks an actual result as the reverse of what the earlier action, intention, or situation led you to expect. The reverse result may be bad or good.
How the meaning works
First establish a reasonable expectation: an explanation should make something clearer, a precaution should reduce a problem, or a shortcut should save time. Then put かえって inside the clause describing what actually happened. The point is not merely that the result was surprising; it ran in the opposite direction from the expected result.
An attempted improvement that backfires
説明を簡単にしようとして情報を削りすぎたため、かえって分かりにくくなった。
I tried to simplify the explanation but removed too much information, so it actually became harder to understand.
AnalyzeThe intention was to make the explanation clearer; the actual result was the reverse.
The reverse result can be favorable

I thought it would be a detour, but taking the riverside road actually got me there sooner.
AnalyzeThe expected disadvantage turned into an advantage.
Reversing an expected comparison
かえって can also mark the less expected side of a comparison as stronger, better, or more suitable. The surrounding context must make the normal expectation clear.
新しい機種より、古い機種のほうがかえって使いやすい。
Contrary to what you might expect, the older model is actually easier to use than the new one.
AnalyzeReverse result versus choosing an alternative
かえって says that the actual result went against an expectation. By contrast, むしろ chooses or corrects toward a better or more accurate alternative; it does not require one event to produce a reverse result.
電車を待つより、むしろ歩いたほうが早い。
Rather than wait for the train, it would be quicker to walk.
AnalyzeThis selects walking as the better alternative; it does not report that waiting produced the opposite of its intended effect.
