くせにEven though (with blame)
くせに presents an unexpected inconsistency while openly criticizing or resenting the person or thing involved. It is stronger and more confrontational than a neutral “even though.”
What the contrast implies
The first part gives a fact, role, ability, or attitude that creates an expectation. The second part describes behavior that violates that expectation, and the speaker treats the inconsistency as worthy of criticism. English translations such as “even though” or “despite” often fail to show how accusatory the Japanese sounds.
Criticizing someone else
Keep the person being criticized easy to identify across both parts of the sentence.
Even though he had been warned repeatedly, he made the same mistake again.
AnalyzeThe speaker is not merely reporting a surprising result; they are criticizing him for ignoring the warnings.
He is the person in charge, yet whenever a problem occurs, he always blames someone else.
AnalyzeWith a noun, the criticism often rests on what the speaker expects from that role or status.
My younger brother has plenty of free time, but he will not help at all.
AnalyzeReproaching yourself
Even though I knew I was not sufficiently prepared, I thought things would somehow work out.
AnalyzeHere the blame is directed inward: the speaker criticizes their own unreasonable confidence.
Ending with an unfinished accusation
Did you start eating by yourself again?
Analyze
You did not wait for me yesterday either.
AnalyzeThe ending leaves the rest unstated: roughly, “so you have no right to criticize me.” This trailing form sounds emotional and conversational.
Blame versus ordinary disappointment
Use のに for a broader unexpected result or disappointment when direct blame is not intended. Replacing it with くせに would add a sharper accusation.
Even though it is raining, the children are playing outside.
AnalyzeThis can simply describe an unexpected situation; no one must be blamed.
