にしてはUnexpected for; considering
にしては says that someone, something, or a result is unusual compared with what the speaker normally expects from the stated category or premise. It often corresponds to “for” or “considering” in English.
Comparing an instance with its category
The noun before にしては supplies a category and activates the speaker’s idea of what is normal for that category. The sentence then points out a feature that does not fit that expectation.
Evaluating a result from a factual premise
A plain verb clause can state the circumstances behind a result. The result is then judged unexpectedly good, bad, large, small, or otherwise unusual given those circumstances.
一晩で書いたにしては、この報告書はよくまとまっている。
Considering that this report was written in one night, it is well organized.
AnalyzeWhen the mismatch creates doubt
にしては is also natural when the mismatch is so strong that the speaker begins to doubt the proposed explanation or category.
君は本当に風邪をひいたにしては、元気すぎない?
If you really have a cold, aren't you a little too energetic?
AnalyzeThe unexpected energy makes the speaker question whether the stated explanation is accurate.
Choosing between two expectation patterns
にしては strongly invites comparison with the norm for a category or a clear factual premise. わりに overlaps with it but is usually the safer choice when the expectation is based directly on a quality or degree.
