というゆうOn the grounds that

というゆう explicitly presents the preceding statement as the reason or grounds used for a decision, action, treatment, or outcome. It is especially useful when reasons are being named, recorded, quoted, or evaluated.

How it works

The part before というゆう is treated as a complete statement that can be called a reason or justification. The following clause tells you what was done or what happened on those grounds.

An institutional decision

だいがくは、せつてんけんひつようだというゆうしょかんいちにちりんきゅうかんにした。

The university closed the library for one day on the grounds that an equipment inspection was necessary.

Analyze

The university is explicitly presenting the need for an inspection as the grounds for its decision.

Reporting a reason without endorsing it

Because this expression labels or quotes the reason being used, it does not automatically mean that the speaker accepts that reason as true or fair. Surrounding language can show a neutral, doubtful, or critical attitude.

かいしゃは「きょう調ちょうせいける」というゆうかれさいようにしたが、そのひょうにはもんのこる。

The company rejected him on the grounds that he lacked teamwork skills, but doubts remain about that assessment.

Analyze

The quoted wording identifies the company's stated grounds; the final clause makes clear that the writer does not simply accept the assessment.

Remember the linking form

With an affirmative nonpast noun or na-adjective, do not drop before というゆう.

かいしゃは、なかさんがけいけんしゃだというゆうおうことわった。

The company rejected Tanaka's application on the grounds that he had no experience.

Analyze

わたしは、しゅうへんしずかだというゆう、このじゅうたくえらんだ。
