ものだEmotional reaction to a fact
ものだ expresses an emotionally engaged reaction—such as surprise, admiration, or wonder—at a fact, result, or degree. In English, it is often conveyed by “really,” “amazing,” or an exclamatory sentence rather than translated word for word.
Reacting rather than merely reporting
The clause gives the fact, and ものだ presents the speaker as stepping back and reacting to it. Context must make that feeling recoverable: the event may be difficult, unexpected, impressive, or striking in degree.
一人でここまで仕上げるとは、よく頑張ったものだ。
Finishing this much all alone—you really worked hard.

How it comes across in English
There is no single fixed English equivalent. Depending on the feeling, a natural translation may use “really,” “quite,” “amazing,” “remarkable,” or an exclamation. The important point is that the sentence does more than state the fact.

Here, ものだ reacts emotionally to an established fact. The same form can instead describe what generally happens or what people normally should do. A past form can also recall an old habit, and the combinations たいものだ and てほしいものだ express wishes rather than reactions to facts.
