させてもらうBe allowed to do something as a favor
させてもらう says that someone permits you to do something and that you experience this permission as helpful or beneficial.
Permission viewed as a benefit
This pattern combines a causative form with the receiver viewpoint of もらう. The subject performs the action, while another person allows it. The wording presents that permission as an opportunity, accommodation, or favor—not merely as a neutral fact about permission.
私は留学中、ホストファミリーに台所を使わせてもらった。
During my study abroad, my host family let me use the kitchen.
AnalyzeWho does what
The person receiving permission is also the person who performs the action. This person is normally the subject, marked by は or が when stated. The person granting permission can be marked by に, but is often omitted when obvious.
私は先生に研究室の資料を読ませてもらった。
My teacher allowed me to read the materials in the research room.
Analyze私 is the reader and recipient of permission; 先生 grants the permission.
Natural everyday uses
The pattern is especially natural when another person controls access or when your action affects them.
Direct permission and humble permission
てもいい asks or grants permission directly. させてもらう instead describes the actor as receiving permission and benefiting from it. The humble させていただく is conventional in more formal interaction, but it should not be substituted automatically when no meaningful permission or benefit is involved.
