Permission, optional actions, and practical acceptability

Choose according to what is being made acceptable. てもいい allows an action; なくてもいい allows you to leave it undone. The other forms add a viewpoint: no inconvenience, permission received as a favor, or a formal judgment that there is no practical obstacle.

Start with the kind of permission

The English words “may,” “can,” and “do not have to” hide several different decisions.

Allow or ask about doing an action

You want the ordinary everyday form for granting or requesting permission.

A statement granting permission is appropriate only if you control the situation or are explaining a rule.

Say that an action is optional

Not doing the action is acceptable, so the person does not have to do it.

The negative verb does not mean that the action is forbidden.

Describe permission received as a benefit

The subject performs the action after receiving another person's helpful permission or accommodation.

The subject is the person who acts and benefits, not the person who gives permission.

The shared shape—and the exception

The ordinary permission and no-problem patterns place after an affirmative or negative te-form. The choice between positive and negative determines whether doing or not doing the action is acceptable. させてもらう is different: it begins with the causative form because the subject is allowed to perform the action.

Permission to act versus permission to omit

Organizer

Yes, you may. Also, you do not have to wear a name tag.

Analyze

The first form permits an action. The second removes a requirement; wearing the name tag is still allowed.

Friendly permission and practical indifference

A host explains which workspace a guest may use.

You may work here.

Analyze

This is the simple, friendly permission choice.

Either the desk by the window or the one by the wall is fine.

Analyze

The host genuinely has no practical preference between the two options.

Takeaway: てもいい directly permits the action. てもかまわない makes the absence of a problem more prominent, which is useful for practical choices but can feel less warm.

Permission viewed from the person who benefits

The editor-in-chief gave me the opportunity to write the feature article.

Analyze

The speaker wrote the article, the editor-in-chief permitted it, and the speaker presents the opportunity as beneficial.

From practical tolerance to formal assessment

A meeting organizer is considering delaying the start by ten minutes.

It is fine to delay the start by ten minutes.

Analyze

This suits a neutral practical conversation in which the speaker does not mind the change.

From an operational standpoint, the start time may be delayed by ten minutes without causing a problem.

Analyze

This sounds like a professional assessment of whether the change interferes with arrangements.

Takeaway: かまわない often reflects tolerance or lack of objection. つかえない is more formal and evaluates whether there is an actual practical obstacle.
