Expresses that a situation is unavoidable, beyond one's control, or that nothing can be done about it. Japanese has several common phrases for this, ranging from everyday resignation to formal acceptance.
To say that something is beyond control and must be accepted, often with a sense of resignation.
The most common, everyday expression. Used in casual conversation to mean 'it can't be helped' or 'there's no other way'.
雨が降ってきたけど、しょうがない。
It started raining, but it can't be helped.
電車が遅れてる。しょうがないね。
The train is late. It can't be helped, huh?
Slightly more formal/literary than しょうがない, but still very common. Literally 'there is no way'.
渋滞だから、仕方がない。
It's a traffic jam, so it can't be helped.
A contracted form of 仕方がない, common in casual speech.
もう終わったことだし、仕方ないよ。
It's already over, so it can't be helped.
Formal, often used in written or official contexts. Implies something is unavoidable due to circumstances.
悪天候のため、中止はやむを得ない。

忘れちゃったなら、しょうがない。

Stronger nuance: 'there's absolutely nothing that can be done'. Often used when a situation is hopeless.
もうどうしようもないよ。諦めよう。
It can't be helped anymore. Let's give up.
To express 'it can't be helped' in a polite or business setting, often with a nuance of regret.
Humble/formal version of 仕方ない. Used in business or when speaking to superiors.
この結果は致し方ないと思います。
I believe this result can't be helped.
Polite form of やむを得ない. Common in formal announcements or apologies.
本日のイベントは中止とさせていただきます。やむを得ません。
Today's event will be cancelled. It can't be helped.
To express a deeper, sometimes philosophical acceptance of fate or the natural order.
Literally 'this too is some kind of fate/connection'. Used to accept an unexpected or seemingly negative event as part of destiny.
こんなところで会うなんて、これも何かの縁だね。
Meeting in a place like this – it must be fate (it can't be helped).
しょうがない is the most colloquial and common. 仕方がない is slightly more formal but still everyday. どうしようもない emphasizes that absolutely nothing can be done, often with a stronger sense of despair.
電車が遅れて、しょうがない。
The train is late – oh well.
努力したけど不合格だった。仕方がない。
I tried hard but failed. It can't be helped.
財布を落として、もうどうしようもない。
I lost my wallet – there's nothing I can do.
English 'it can't be helped' is often translated directly as 助けられない, but this is incorrect. 助ける means 'to help' as in 'to assist', not 'to be unavoidable'. Always use the phrases above.
