やむを得ない is a formal, written expression for 'unavoidable,' while どうしようもない is more colloquial and conveys a stronger feeling of helplessness.
手に負えない focuses on being unable to control a person or situation, while どうしようもない more generally means nothing at all can be done about it.
From どう (how) + しよう (volitional of する, 'to do') + も (even) + ない (not), literally 'there is not even a way to do how'. The contracted form どうしょうもない is a common colloquial reduction.
