Translation guide
The English word "pathetic" has two main meanings: 1) causing pity or sadness, and 2) miserably inadequate or worthless. Japanese uses different words for these nuances, and context determines the best choice.
Describing someone or something that makes you feel sorry for them, often due to weakness or misfortune.
The most direct equivalent for 'pitiful' or 'miserable'. Often used in literary or emotional contexts.
Seeing his pathetic figure, I cried.
Common in everyday speech for 'pitiful' or 'poor thing'. Conveys sympathy.

Slightly more formal than かわいそうな, meaning 'pitiful' or 'unfortunate'.

Describes something that looks painful or pitiful to watch, often physically or emotionally.

Expressing that something is so bad or weak that it deserves scorn or contempt.
The most common word for 'pathetic' in the sense of shameful, miserable, or disappointing. Often used about oneself or someone's actions.

Do not use 哀れな for 'pathetic' in the sense of 'contemptibly bad'. That would sound like you are pitying the person, not scorning them.
情けない expresses disappointment or contempt for something shamefully inadequate. 哀れな expresses pity or compassion for someone's unfortunate state. Mixing them up can change the nuance entirely.
His attempt was pathetic.

Means 'shameful', 'disgraceful', or 'unsightly'. Used when someone's behavior or appearance is embarrassingly bad.
