Etymology
南 is a pictograph of a musical instrument, later borrowed to represent the direction south. The modern form is stylized and no longer resembles the original instrument.
Meaning mnemonic
The top 十 looks like a compass rose pointing in all directions, and the lower part resembles a map marker. Together they mark the south.
Reading mnemonic
For ナン, imagine a compass needle pointing south while you eat a warm naan bread: naan -> ナン, and the bread is baked in the southern sun.
