Etymology
闘 is the modern simplified form of 鬪, which originally depicted two figures facing each other with weapons, conveying conflict. The modern form replaces the complex inner part with a simplified structure inside the gate radical 門, but the historical development is not fully transparent.
Meaning mnemonic
Inside the gate 門, imagine two warriors with beans 豆 and a measuring tool 寸 locked in a fierce fight. The gate frames the arena of battle.
Reading mnemonic
For トウ, picture a toe-to-toe fight inside the gate: toe -> トウ, and the combatants are locked in war.
