Used for appearance, dress, or surroundings that are uncluttered and orderly. Often used with した or している.

• 彼かれはいつもさっぱりした服ふく装そうをしている。

  He always dresses neatly.

• 部屋へやをさっぱりと片かた付づけた。

  I tidied up the room neatly.

frank; open-hearted; simple

Describes a personality or manner that is straightforward, unpretentious, and easygoing. Often used with した or している.

• 彼かの女じょはさっぱりした性せい格かくで、誰だれとでもすぐ仲なか良よくなる。

  She has a frank personality and quickly becomes friends with anyone.

• この料りょう理りは味あじがさっぱりしていて食たべやすい。

  This dish has a light, simple taste and is easy to eat.

Used with negative verbs or expressions to mean 'not at all' or 'completely not'. Stronger than 全然.

• 彼かれの言いっていることがさっぱりわからない。

  I don't understand what he's saying at all.

• 最さい近きん、彼かれからさっぱり連れん絡らくがない。

  I haven't heard from him at all lately.

Used with negative verbs to emphasize a complete lack. Similar to sense 4 but explicitly marked as adverbial with negative polarity.

• この問もん題だいはさっぱり手てがつけられない。

  I can't make any headway on this problem at all.

na-adjective

hopeless; useless; awful

Describes a situation, result, or performance that is completely unsatisfactory. Often used as さっぱりだ.

• テストの結けっ果かはさっぱりだった。

  The test results were awful.

• 今年ことしの売うり上あげはさっぱりだ。

  This year's sales are hopeless.
