unlucky direction (in Onmyōdō)
Archaic term from Onmyōdō cosmology. Refers to a direction considered unlucky due to the presence of a deity such as Ten'ichijin; related to the practice of 方違え (katatagae) to avoid such directions.
陰陽道では、天一神のいる方角を方塞がりと呼んだ。
In Onmyōdō, the direction where Ten'ichijin resided was called katatagari (unlucky direction).
方塞がりを避けるために、方違えという儀式が行われた。
To avoid the unlucky direction, a ritual called katatagae was performed.
Compound of 方 (kata, 'direction') and 塞がり (futagari, 'blockage'). The reading ふたがり is a rendaku form of ふさがり.
