noun
defective verb
A grammatical term for a verb that lacks some of the normal conjugational forms, such as ある in modern Japanese which has no plain negative form (*あらない).
現代日本語の「ある」は欠如動詞の一例で、否定形は「ない」で代用される。
Modern Japanese 'aru' is an example of a defective verb; its negative form is supplied by 'nai'.
