ventral nerve cord
Anatomical term for the nerve cord running along the ventral (belly) side of invertebrates such as arthropods and annelids.
The ventral nerve cord of insects has a ganglion in each body segment.
Compound of 腹 (ふく, 'belly, abdomen') + 神経 (しんけい, 'nerve') + 索 (さく, 'cord'). The term is a direct calque of the English 'ventral nerve cord'.
