Used when someone can produce a plausible excuse or justification for a situation. Often appears in negative forms like 言い訳が立たない (no excuse can be made).

• 遅ち刻こくの理り由ゆうを聞きかれて、彼かれは言いい訳わけが立たたなかった。

  When asked for the reason for being late, he couldn't come up with an excuse.

• あれだけ証しょう拠こが揃そろっていると、もう言いい訳わけが立たたないだろう。

  With that much evidence, there's probably no excuse left to make.
