I left a message with reception and went home.

Common in artistic, literary, or expressive contexts: one puts thoughts, feelings, hopes, or opinions into a poem, song, image, gesture, and so on.
作者はその詩に故郷への思いを託した。
The author put his feelings for his hometown into that poem.
彼女は歌に平和への願いを託した。
She expressed her wish for peace through the song.

Limited, rather formal or literary use, often in the pattern Nに託して. In ordinary modern speech, 口実にする or かこつける is usually more direct.
