Traditional unit of distance, about 3.927 km or 2.44 miles. Still used in historical contexts, place names, and some set phrases.

The kanji 里 originally depicted a village or a measure of land. The reading り is the Sino-Japanese on'yomi, used for both the distance and area units as well as the historical neighbourhood unit.
