come to an end; be over; be hopeless
Literary or set-expression use meaning that a matter has reached its end, often with a nuance of there being no way out. Commonly encountered in fixed expressions such as 万事休す and 事ここに休す.
証拠を突きつけられ、彼は万事休すと悟った。
Confronted with the evidence, he realized that it was all over.
資金が尽き、計画はここに休した。
The funds ran out, and the plan came to an end there.
suru verb (special), intransitive verb
A literary or formal verb for resting; in ordinary modern conversation, 休む is the normal choice.
一行は木陰にしばし休した。
The party rested for a while in the shade of the trees.
