A much less common use meaning to act or work together. Modern everyday Japanese normally uses 協力 instead; 共和する has an old-fashioned or formal ring.
古い文章で「共和して事に当たる」とあれば、皆で協力して取り組むという意味だ。
If an old text says 共和して事に当たる, it means that everyone works together on the matter.
