A condition or assumption that must be satisfied before something else can happen or be discussed. Often used in formal, logical, or planning contexts.
This plan is based on the assumption that there is sufficient budget.
A prerequisite for success is having clear goals.
Less common usage; refers to the underlying intent or purpose behind an action. Often replaced by 意図 or 目的 in modern Japanese.
They are dating with marriage in mind.
premise
Technical term in logic; a statement from which a conclusion is drawn.
The premise of this argument is flawed.
This plan is premised on securing the necessary funds.
They parted with the assumption that they would meet again next year.
We drew up the budget under the assumption that everyone would participate.
New information caused the underlying premise to fall apart.
