Formal word for placing strong expectations on someone, especially regarding their future promise. Very often used in the passive pattern 将来を嘱望される, “to be regarded as having a promising future.”

• 彼かれは将しょう来らいを嘱しょく望ぼうされる若わか手て研けん究きゅう者しゃだ。

  He is a young researcher from whom much is expected in the future.

• 周しゅう囲いは彼かの女じょの才さい能のうを嘱しょく望ぼうしていた。

  Those around her had great hopes for her talent.
