single-member constituency; small electoral district
A political term for an electoral district that elects one representative, as opposed to a multi-member district. Common in discussions of Japan's electoral system.
In Japan's House of Representatives elections, single-member constituencies and proportional representation are used together.
It is said that the single-member district system tends to produce a two-party system.
