Usually refers to household items waiting to be washed, especially dirty dishes; it can also mean the chore of washing them, as in 洗い物をする or 洗い物を済ませる. For clothes and towels, 洗濯物 is often the more specific word, but 洗い物 can be used more generally for things to wash.
