good-for-nothing; idler; waster
A derogatory term for someone who is unproductive and lives off others, literally 'one who eats idle meals'. Often used in the phrase 無駄飯食いの役立たず.
That guy is a real good-for-nothing.
I was called a useless idler.
Standard kanji spelling.
Variant using 喰 (a less common kanji for eating).
From 無駄飯, food consumed by someone who does no useful work, and 食い, “eater”; hence a person who lives at others’ expense without contributing.
