A somewhat formal or objective term for one's own father, often used when speaking about him to others. In direct address or within the family, お父さん is more common.
私の父親は医者です。
My father is a doctor.
彼は父親のことを尊敬している。
He respects his father.
He became the father of twins last year.
He raised his children strictly in his role as a father.
